Why Network Marketing?
Apr 26Over the last few months I have had many people ask me: “Why did you choose network marketing?”
Some recommended that I go into a corporate environment and become successful at management. Others told me to go into outside sales. Several asked me why not start my own (traditional) business or internet based business with my own products or services.
The truth is, I have considered all of these and many other options in pursuing personal and financial success … but after careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that network marketing (MLM, home based business, direct sales, etc) is the best path for me to take, especially at this point in my life.
I hope that my analysis will help you make your own informed decision in building a successful career and designing a fulfilled life.
While my decision was based on far more than just income opportunity, let’s start by taking a look at the different forms of generating income.
The first, and most common way, is a job. As we all know, in a job you work for somebody’s else’s business (or the government), and you have a boss that generally controls or decides what you do, what hours you work, and how much you get paid. Of course, I believe you have some control in every situation, and you can change jobs or even shift careers if you dislike your employment circumstances. Most people look at a job as a safe and secure income, and it is the most common way of earning money.
At 19, I was relatively successful in a corporate job, but I couldn’t stand the thought of developing a future with it. Even if I climbed to the top of the corporate ladder and became the CEO, I knew that I would never achieve the FREEDOM that I wanted this way… I would have to work 50 hours or more per week to build an asset that somebody else owned. I would have to limit my vacations and travels to a few weeks per year, and I would not grow up to be the kind of family man and father that I aspire to be. I quickly realized that even in the best of circumstances, I would not be fulfilled in this scenario… so I crossed this option off my list.
Another form of generating income is to start your own business, with your own products, ideas, services, business plan, team, and system. While this option certainly appeals to my entrepreneurial spirit, I currently avoid it for several reason:
1. It generally requires significant capital, which I do not have as a full-time student. With college loans, I cannot borrow start-up capital either. And I would hesitate to give away too much equity.
2. More importantly, it requires more than a full-time effort. As a full-time student, I already juggle school, work, volunteering, and a vibrant social life. If you are starting your own business, you must be fully focused on it, or you are likely to fail and lose it all. This clearly isn’t the right time in my life for me to make that sacrifice.
3. In addition to a lack of time and money, I also have limited experience in business. Diving in head first and attempting to create my own business system, with business partners and employees depending on me for a paycheck, doesn’t seem like a great idea before first gaining some experience… not to mention more free time and access to capital.
4. Creating my own products, services, system, hiring my own employees, finding the right business partners, renting out real estate, etc. is a huge time commitment… which brings me back to my initial goal: to create freedom. If I am so busy that the business I own owns me, am I really free?
For these reasons and more, I ruled this out as an option, at least for the time being. I do one day plan to create my own personal development business catered towards youth, but I will do so once I have the time freedom I seek.
Another option is to buy a franchise. While this sounds nice it that it would require less time and experience, it is simple not practical for me because of the capital investment. I don’t have half a million dollars to throw into it, even if the system is guaranteed to make a profit.
Yet another option is to make an investment income. Again, this requires significant capital as well as savvy investor skills. At this point, I have neither.
Finally, we come to the option of starting a home-based business with a network marketing company.
Let’s go through a few points here:
- Unlike a job, you own your business here. While you have mentorship and support, you do NOT have a boss. You choose your own hours and work habits. More importantly, you get to KEEP your income, even if you are not putting in the hours.
- At a job, your income stops once you leave for the day. With network marketing (when done right) you get paid for your results, not your time, so you can build an income that pays you whether or not you are putting in the time. Also, there is no ceiling on your income. The more money you make, the more money your upline and the company makes, so everyone is in favor of helping you earn more profits, rather than trying to cut your wages as low as possible.
- Unlike a traditional business or a franchise, you don’t need significant capital to get started. Most home-based businesses take less than a thousand dollars to start and can be effectively maintained for $100 – $200 or less per month, with no other overhead or risk.
- You can work part-time. You don’t need to go full-time to start making a profit. Even better, through leverage you can create a full-time income or more by working consistently on a part-time basis. This immediately sets it aside from a traditional business start-up, which generally owns your life more than you own it.
- You don’t have to manufacture products, hire customer service, worry about legal issues, buy real estate, create marketing material … you don’t even have to ship products! You build the business, and the company takes care of all the details, costs, and overhead.
- You don’t have to create your own system. You can plug into a PROVEN system and compensation plan … which generally has a business plan that has already created millionaires, as well as many full-time and part-time income earners. All you have to do is follow the plan, just like in a franchise, and you can achieve significant results.
- While it helps, you don’t NEED experience. Because there is so little risk, you can start knowing nothing at all about the business, and begin to learn while you earn, being taught by your sponsor or successful mentor and company training material. This not only goes for you, but all the people you introduce to the business, giving you the confidence that you can sponsor people that will become successful IF they have the desire.
- Most importantly, actually can achieve freedom with it. This is what attracted me most. I can be in class, at the beach, or sleeping, and STILL earn an income. I can develop a six or seven figure income here, and actually have the time freedom to enjoy it.
- You can only achieve success by helping others do so. I quickly realized that the only way I could dramatically increase my income in network marketing was by helping others become successful. This gives me incredible fulfillment in doing my work, knowing that I am helping others achieve their dreams in the process of working to achieve my own.
- I get to own my own business, without the headaches. I get to build my own team, brand myself, and empower others to change their lives, without having to worry about payroll, manufacturing, and the rest.
The reasons above and many more cover why I chose network marketing as my vehicle for financial and time freedom, and as well personal fulfillment.
I hope my long answer helped clarify a few things for you, and maybe even helped you come to your own conclusion.

P.S. – While I rarely hear this silly objection anymore, it still comes up sometimes, so let me clear the air. Networking marketing is NOT equivalent to a pyramid schemes. Pyramid schemes are out there, and they are not legal. They do approach the marketplace through network marketing, but this does NOT mean that network marketing itself has anything to do with pyramid or ponzi schemes. This professional video should explain it better than I can:
