Power, Love, And Wisdom (Your Highest Self)

August 28, 2014 by [email protected] 1 Comment

This is day 6 of my 33 open journal experiment. I’ve been wanting to write publicly about this topic for awhile, so a blog post is a better fit than Facebook for this one.

The highest version of yourself is at the intersection of Power, Love, and Wisdom.

Love

Love is the source and the point. It’s what creates life and bonds life together. If you disregard the Power and Wisdom components, and just live with Love, you’ll be okay.

Love should be the motivation for your life, for how you build your career/business, for how you cultivate your relationships, for how you show up in the world. It’s the greatest form of energy there is. I can write more about Love here, but so much has already been written, and it ultimately just sounds cliche to write more words for it here – you’ve either found this truth for yourself, or you haven’t (yet).

Grow your ability to Love, and you’ll live a better life. Love yourself, Love others, Love your work, Love the world, Love Love.

There was a time in my life where I believed Love and your “Inner God” or your ‘highest self’ were synonymous, but that model has evolved for me to instead be the intersection of Power, Love, and Wisdom… or your greatest expression of Love.

Power

Power amplifies whatever it’s attached to. Power is influence, the ability to create change, the force that makes things happen.

On a more “practical” level, you grow your Power by growing your ability to influence and create change in the world. Learning copywriting is increasing your Power, because you can influence people’s decisions. Growing your audience is Power, because you can reach more people with your message. Gaining and direction wealth is a great form of Power, because the market forces dictate so much of what each individual and society as a whole does, and because it expands your own freedom and ability to influence.

Power is your ability to change minds, change behavior, change the way the world works.

So if you start with Love as your base motivation for creation, as the energy source for your life, then Power amplifies that Love. Amplifies your expression of Love. Empowers you to influence more people with your Love.

In my drawing, the overlap of Power and Love is Love expressed, amplified, and expanded.

Wisdom

Wisdom is the human expression of Truth.

The highest form of Wisdom is the closest we can get to understanding and expressing Truth. It’s seeing as far forward as we can into our future, based on understanding the cyclical nature of our past. It’s understanding how the world works, it’s understanding the chain of action-reaction as far as the human mind can see.

On a more practical level, Wisdom is knowing what to do to get a desired result.

You go to a mentor with Wisdom because they can see farther and deeper than you, and can help you make the right decision when you’re lost, expand your perspective, or see a greater truth in your current reality.

The overlap of Wisdom and Love is consciousness.

If you take Wisdom and overlap it with Power, you’ll know how to best use your Power. Grow both your Wisdom and your Power, and you multiply your influence. Your decisions will be wiser, based on a greater understanding of Truth, and you’ll be able to do a lot more with your growing Power.

The highest version of yourself is at the intersection of Power, Love, and Wisdom.

Bring yourself to the center of these three energies… you start with Love as your Source, you amplify its experience and expression with Power, and you multiply by directing it with Wisdom.

Knowing this isn’t enough.

How do you apply it?

It’s simple, but it’s a life long journey. Grow each energy. Commit to growing your Love. Commit to expanding your Power. Commit to gaining greater Wisdom. Let this become your model for personal growth, using these circles as broad categories for the skills, concepts, and lessons you create for yourself.

As you commit to this journey, you also become a force in building a humanity that can sustain a deep understanding of Love.

PS – Massive gratitude to Vivian Hanai who planted this seed in my head when she taught me the mantra “I am Power, Love, and Wisdom” before speaking at Eben Pagan’s Accelerate last year. That mantra has now taken on a greater meaning for me, as it means I am my highest self, an expression of God, my greatest expression of Love.

25 Things You Don’t Know About Me

January 8, 2014 by [email protected] 3 Comments

It’s my 25th birthday today. A quarter century.

25 is also the age limit for Maverick NEXT, and I believe it’s a pivotal year for many young leaders. While the number itself can feel somewhat arbitrary, I think that most things are largely arbitrary until we give them our own meaning. To me, 25 represents entering a new phase of life, where the creativity, determination, and inspiration of my youth meets a higher wisdom, spiritual awareness, and most importantly right action. It’s the year of really creating something meaningful in the world, to set the tone for the next quarter century of my life and my service to the world.

That was just a short rant – this post is actually about vulnerability. One of my personal goals this year is to become more vulnerable, more authentic. Not just with those closest to me – but with the world. To be honest about my past, present, and future. My faults, mistakes, and shortcomings, along with my accomplishments, dreams, and ambitions.

So I’m starting with the 25 things you probably don’t know about me. If you know me closely, some of these are apparent, but many are news to my closest friends as well as distant acquaintances.

Some are deep, some are light and silly.

1. I am insecure and struggle with fear, depression, and anxiety… despite my outward confidence and “success.”

2. I believe that I’m destined for greatness, to create something influential and meaningful in the world, and leave a huge legacy.

3. I don’t really know what that “greatness” is, despite my sometimes outward definiteness of purpose, but I believe it. At times though, I question whether I really am, or if I am just delusional – though I guess that’s up to me to define with my actions.

4. I genuinely compare myself to Steve Jobs. While giving me great drive, this usually leads to unhappiness.

5. I was bullied a lot as a child. Part of it was because I was an immigrant, “poor” by American standards, was raised by a single mother, etc – and part because I was just so damn introverted that I appeared to have serious social anxiety issues.

6. In my youth, I responded to bullying by becoming a rebellious punk, then a ‘gangsta’ – and while I quickly matured, I kept my rebellious nature for a long time. I was even politically active in high school, largely against the administration, and didn’t trust authorities.

7. I got virtually straight A’s in high school and graduated Cum Laude from a top university (Brandeis) with a double major. Yet I don’t have much faith in formal education, especially not for entrepreneurs or others pursuing a more independent career. I believe public education reform is long overdue, and I believe that the way that ‘higher education’ is sold (yes, SOLD, at hundreds of thousands of dollars per student) in society is largely a scam.

8. I am really bad at finishing things through to success. I am really good at starting things that would be successful, if someone finished them.

9. I’m for the legalization of almost every drug, except maybe heroin and similar highly addictive and deadly substances.

10. I don’t “read” that much, but I typically go through 1 – 2 audiobooks a week. If adding reading and audio, I’ve gone through over 400 books and programs since I started my personal development journey at 19. Not including college related reading.

11. My favorite movies currently are: jOBS and Alice In Wonderland.

12. I’m a pantheistic atheist/humanist searching for god.

13. I don’t care that much about money.

14. In my spare time (okay – I don’t usually have spare time, but in my car alone for example), I freestyle to myself and write rap verses.

15. Until recently, I was relatively undeveloped ‘as a man’ – always searching for a father figure. This caused tension in past relationships with adult males and mentors, and disappointed me; I was looking for something that wasn’t there. I’ve now developed my own inner strength, my manhood.

16. My favorite artist/band is Pink Floyd. Before that, it was probably Eminem.

17. I don’t drink much or smoke tobacco, but I’ve had some of my happiest and most insightful moments with a glass of cognac in one hand and a cigar in the other.

18.  Since I’ve started my company, I’ve had one real vacation – 3 years ago in Aruba – that I was totally disconnected for a week. Outside of that, the most I’ve been disconnected at a time is 2 days. One my goals for 2014 is to take another complete vacation, sitting under a palm tree on a hammock for a week on a tropical island, doing pretty much nothing.

19. My social circle ranges from Maverick millionaire entrepreneurs, to artists and musicians, to spiritual masters, to the world’s best pickup artists – but I’m not actually in any of these demographics myself.

20. I worry about appearing too egotistical, and that worry drives a lot of my behavior. At the same time, I worry about living too small.

21. As a kid, I was naturally good at drawing, chess, and piano.

22. When I was 14, I had a demo CD of my rap. It had like 15 tracks – hopefully you will never hear them, as many of the lyrics were violent, depressing, or ignorant. Like most rap.

23. I don’t really know what my ‘gift’ is. Connecting people? Inspiring? Teaching? Building companies? Technical intelligence? Visionary? I’m relatively good at these, but I don’t know what to focus on to become my best self and be of greatest service to the world.

24. I’ve been trying to stop biting my nails for as long as I can remember. It’s my most annoying vice and I can’t seem to get rid of it.

25. Since 19, my biggest goal was to become a millionaire by 25. I’ve ‘failed’ but that’s okay – because I’ve become rich in so many other ways that are more important, and I know the millionaire milestone is not far down the road, when I focus on that – but it’s also becoming so much less important to me.

Thanks for reading. Today, I’m most grateful for all the people in my life that have been there to positively influence me over the years, and those who will be there for the journey in the coming years. There are too many to name, and I’m so grateful for that. Thank you.

Refresh With New Experiences

July 7, 2012 by [email protected] 1 Comment

Hey, this post is sort of a rant, but an interesting one. You might enjoy it – but don’t expect a purpose 😉 it’s kind of like my journal entries.

My life has been pretty interesting lately, but I still get stuck in ruts sometimes. Like many, I still get into cyclical thinking… worry, anxiety… I get stuck, and lose my creative energy. And I’ve figured out a pretty good formula for resetting and re-inspiring myself. Actually, I didn’t figure it out – many did before me, but I just came to the clear realization for myself.

Whenever I feel “stuck” … I just need to do something totally new, usually totally unrelated to where/why I’m stuck. For example, I’m in Utah right now… and it used to be that even just traveling to a new place gave me a great reset. In this case, it didn’t… but the compilation of experiences I’ve had here did.

A few days ago, we went hot air ballooning here. It was such an incredible experience, and even though I started off the morning with quite a bit of anxiety about some business stuff, by the time I was up in the air, I feel like I figured it all out. I wasn’t even thinking about, but looking at life from such a bird’s eye view, at a pace slow enough to take it all in, gave me a whole new outlook on life for that day. It was easier to see the big picture, and not get stuck in the minutia.

That’s Yanik’s balloon – I took the picture from mine.

New experiences, often even just travel – or even new music, expand your perspective on everything – even things you wouldn’t expect at all. They expand your mind, and minutia starts feel like, well… minutia. Even issues that seem like they’re big and stressful start to get smaller and less significant.

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

So go out there… try something new. Learn a new art, a new sport, a new language. Learn how to cook something. Best – travel somewhere new, and do something new while you’re out there. Meet some new people, and do some new things with the people you’ve known forever.

“Do one thing each day that scares you.”

Go sky diving… white water rafting… hot air ballooning… kayaking… start a business – or quite one… speak in front of a crowd… tell someone how you truly feel about that… turn your phone off for awhile (believe it or not – this one scares me a lot)… give something away that you value… thank someone… forgive someone… forgive yourself… try something, even if you’re likely to fail at it, even if it scares the crap out of you.

Live your life to the fullest. Drop your excuses – they’re too heavy. Drop the mindless cycles – they never go anywhere new. Break through. Refresh yourself with new experiences.

Just remember… the only one holding you back is you.

Start by putting together your big life list, and start evolving it as your go. Add to it, and cross things off. I put a few cool things on mine that I didn’t really expect to happen in such a short time

  • Hang out with Tim Ferriss
  • Go hot air ballooning

And a bunch of other cool stuff that wasn’t even directly on my list.

And despite all the extremely hard work I put into my business every single day – my biggest break throughs have been during these unique experiences. I’m not saying don’t have daily disciplines… you have to work hard to reach your goals. Super hard. But remember – more of the same isn’t always the answer – disengage so you can re-engage on a whole new level, and experience life from a new perspective. Refresh yourself with new experiences, and you’ll experience more growth on every level.

By the way – I really love this song lately:

Can A Business Coach Change Your Life?

June 26, 2011 by [email protected] Leave a Comment

NO!

Let me explain – only you can change your own life for the better with the decision that you make. BUT having a business coach can have a dramatic impact on the direction that you take your life in, and the results that you get from your business and your life.

I was inspired to write this post because I have been working with a business coach, Garry Carlson, since late March, and the past three months for me have been transformational, to say the least.

What you can gain from a business coach:

  • Accountability. It is a literally coach’s job to care about your business and ensure that you keep the promises you make to yourself. Having weekly coaching calls helps you stay on top of your goal list. You will report back every week with an overview of what you have and haven’t accomplished based on your long term goals and your action items for the previous week. This alone change dramatically improve your personal productivity.
  • Experience and wisdom. A business coach works and has worked with many other business owners, and understands the financial, psychological, and emotional struggles that entrepreneurs face. He or she has dealt with them many times, and has helped many of his or her clients get over them. A coach’s wisdom can also stop you from wasting months or years (or thousands of dollars) working in the wrong direction, and can provide incredible guidance when setting your goals and developing your strategy.
  • Bigger and clearer goals. Having a coach by your side will empower you to set bigger and more defined goals for yourself and your business, because you know you will have someone to help guide you towards those goals. Additionally, a coach may often believe in you more than you believe in yourself in the early stages, and will encourage you to set greater goals for yourself.
  • A process to the madness. Entrepreneurship can be tough, crazy, and disorganized, especially when you are primarily working solo. Having a coach helps you add a structured, guided process to ensure success in your venture, not to mention overall better organization in your life and business, especially when it comes to time management.
  • Balance. I don’t know about other coaches, but my coach Garry has helped me find greater balance in my life, helping me not only grow my business financially, but also develop it in such a way that it helps me attain the lifestyle that I want to create for myself. He encourages the business FUNdamentals, teaching that it is difficult to succeed at something that you can’t have fun at!
  • Encouragement. If you struggle with self-doubt, as many entrepreneurs do especially in the early stages (I know I did), a good great will help you replace that self-doubt with a rock solid self-confidence. This confidence will be the result of not only a changed emotional state, but also assurance in the fact that you have a plan, are achieving improved results, and have greater clarity in everything you do.

For me personally, working with Garry has been a significant factor in my ability to start my business on a full-time basis after graduation. Not only is my business profitable now and has incredible prospects for the near future, I have also been able to significantly improve my lifestyle and general happiness. I take more time for what I love, like playing tennis with my friends, spending quality time with my girlfriend Ally, learning new things (currently teaching myself Spanish), and traveling to new places (just came back from Aruba two weeks ago, currently writing this post in Vermont, and have a lot of travel plans in the coming months).

If you are a business owner looking to grow your current business, or an entrepreneur looking to start a business, I strongly encourage you to get in touch with a coach. Some offer a 15 minute free coaching session… I know Garry does so, you can fill out his form here to get your free session.

If you are a business owner (including network marketing or any other home business!), I hope this post gave you insight into growing your business. If you have had any experience with a coach, please comment below!
